These specific hiking trails range in difficulty, but each offer their own unique sights. No matter what activity you have planned, these areas are sure to bring you amazing times. In no particular order, here are the top 5 fall hiking trails in Chippewa County!

1. Lake Wissota Loop at Lake Wissota State Park
The lake Wissota loop goes through Lake Wissota State Park and covers some other smaller trails as well. This gorgeous trail has it all, with scenic lake views and woodsy wonderlands of red, orange, and yellow leaves making up your journey. The entire loop is about 6.2 miles of unpaved trail, although it’s known to be an easy hike. The Lake Wissota Loop makes for a relaxing stroll through one of our two excellent state parks! Be sure to stop by 1917 Lake Wissota for a delicious dinner and drinks while soaking in some more lakeside views after your wonderful hike.

2. Area 178
Area 178 is not only a popular hiking area, but also an excellent mountain biking trail as well. This trail runs along both the Chippewa River and Lake Wissota shorelines, providing excellent views of some of the most iconic waterways in Chippewa County. Follow the trail long enough and you’ll make it to the Xcel Energy Dam, where the surrounding area is filled with rocks and small streams, making for a scenic and fun climb. The rocky section can be difficult to traverse, but avoid climbing the rocks and this 6.1 mile trail can make for another relaxing hike! 3. Kemper Woods Loop
Nestled just outside Chippewa Falls, Kemper Woods offers a serene fall hiking experience across 80 acres of pristine conserved land. The 1.6-mile loop winds through upland woods and young pine stands, providing hikers with a peaceful fall landscape. Part of the larger Hallie Marsh Wildlife Area, this trail is particularly special for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers. The trail is relatively easy, making it perfect for families and casual hikers looking to enjoy Chippewa County’s beauty. Hikers can expect a 30-45 minute walk through a tranquil forest setting, with opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy the quiet scenery. The well-marked trail and convenient parking make Kemper Woods an accessible and enjoyable fall hiking destination.

4. Ice Age Trail
Roughly 23 miles of perfect hiking trails passes through the great Chippewa County Forest as part of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, a trail famous for showcasing our picturesque local scenery. The land was shaped by glaciers many years ago, making for interesting knob and swale landscapes. There are multiple different segments available to explore, ranging from the Ice Age Interpretive Center in New Auburn to Brunet Island State Park in Cornell, so you have full control over how you want your hike to go!

5. Irvine Park
Located near downtown Chippewa Falls, Irvine Park & Zoo is a prime destination for gorgeous fall hiking. With over 318 acres of land, there are a wide variety of trails perfect for repeat visits. Cross the bridge and you’ll end up in Erickson Park on the other side of the Glen Loch Dam, where even more trails await. Difficulty and distance are up to you, as the park features paved and unpaved paths, hilly and flat terrain, and an abundance of trails of varying lengths. Talk about endless possibilities! Irvine Park’s stunning fall colors mixed with their fun zoo make for a guaranteed enjoyable time whether alone or with friends and family.
