Winter, summer, rain or shine the Chippewa Area History Center is a perfect afternoon activity when you don’t know what to do with yourself. With constantly evolving exhibits and so many unique and interesting facts about Chippewa County and the things that make it so special, you are going to want to check out this as one of your pocket-size adventures!
The new Chippewa Area History Center opened in the spring of 2023 and also houses the Chippewa County Genealogical and Historical Society. They have decades of records in addition to incredible artifacts! The design of the building was inspired by the old logging camp that had been located in Chippewa Falls. The diamond windows and rafters inside the new history center create a similar experience to that if you were in the camp itself. Although today, instead of holding and shipping lumber, it is the home of our rich history.
I had a great visit. Upon entering, you are welcomed and invited to sign the guest book that dates back decades from the previous History Center’s location. There are exhibits about the rich history of logging, indigenous peoples, trading, sports, and more. There is something for everyone here and as the museum gains more and more artifacts, you’ll need to visit again. My favorite aspect of the museum is the functional telegraph that shows the live news feed from BBC. It’s cool to see that technology from the past can be compatible with technology today.
In addition to the amazing exhibits, there are a lot of things for kids to do, such as a coloring table, building blocks, lincoln logs, and more. You can also climb to the top floor to the Phillips Lookout to see the pool and park across the street from a new perspective!
Although hours could be spent at this local treasure, you need only a few to see the beauty and history that our corner of Wisconsin holds. We are excited to share it with you.
