Seymour Cray’s 100th Birthday Open House

The Chippewa Area History Center and Chippewa Falls Museum of Industry and Technology will jointly celebrate what would have been Seymour Cray’s 100th birthday on Sunday, September 28, 2025.
The open house at both museums will include snacks, refreshments, and games. Exhibits will be available at both locations, with tours of the Cray-centered exhibits at CFMIT.
The organizations have been collaborating with The National Museum of Computing in Bletchley Park, UK. A roundtable Q&A discussion with former employees and colleagues will take place in the Diamond Classroom at the Chippewa Area History Center at 3 pm.
Visitors are invited to visit both museums to learn about the life and impact of Seymour Cray, “the Father of the Supercomputer”. No admission charge, but donations are encouraged.
Seymour Cray Jr. was born in Chippewa Falls in 1925. He is often credited with being the father of supercomputing since developing one of the first high performance/supercomputers the CDC6600. From his early days with Control Data Corporation (CDC), through his time with Cray Research and Cray Computer Corp, he was a pioneer in the industry, with ideas and innovations far ahead of their time. Cray died in 1996. Cray Research is now a subsidiary of Hewlett Packard Enterprise, which maintains a branch in Chippewa Falls.
