We will be leading a hike of the Chippewa River Segment of the Ice Age Trail. This segment is 1.9 miles and we do the hike as an out and back for a total of 3.8 miles. For the first half mile, we will travel high about the Chippewa River with views of Brunet Island State Park. This time of year, the segment is carpeted with a wide variety of spring ephemerals such as hepatica, trilliums, marsh marigolds, and trout lilies. This hilly section will take you through a gully with a cross section of a hill revealing the glacial till left behind by the last glacier. When we reach County CC, we will cross the road and enter the Krank Preserve. The trail will take us up and down hills. We will cross a number of creeks and then circle around Perch Lake before reaching the trailhead on County Z. After a short rest break, we will return back down the trail to the parking lot on County CC.
Hikers should arrive at 12:45 at the County CC parking lot for the Ice Age Trail. County CC is located just west of the blue bridge over the Chippewa River at Cornell, Wisconsin. Turn onto County CC and go about 2 miles to our Ice Age Trail parking lot. There is a large IAT sign at the parking lot on the right.
Please wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Bring water.
